Wheelchair Ramps

There are two main categories of wheelchair ramp; temporary and permanent. If you or a loved one finds themselves in need of a scooter or wheelchair you will soon recognise the many difficulties that will present themselves when it comes to getting out and about.

In your own home, you will want to install a permanent access in order to enable you to get in and out but you may find you need equipment when out of the house as well and this is where temporary wheelchair ramps become invaluable.

There are four main types of temporary and portable wheelchair ramp; threshold ramps, suitcase ramps, rollup ramps and telescoping ramps. Threshold ramps are the most simple to use and are among the most common. These are a simple wedge shaped often made of rubber or metal and will allow access to a height of about 6 inches.

Suitcase ramps come in lengths of 2 to 6 feet and fold once in the centre and can be used to bridge gaps over curbs and steps. They are easily portable but you will need to check the maximum weight restrictions. Rollup ramps are also easily portable and a side rail is used to add stability and guidance.

Telescoping ramps are probably the most portable choice and are made up of two thin ramps that can extend in length one used for each side of a wheelchair. When making your choice you should consider the types of places you are likely to visit and whether you feel you will need to use the wheelchair ramps often. If so, the more portable the better.
